OPELIKA, Alabama – The Troy men's golf record book was put on notice Monday as the 50th-ranked Trojans flirted with history and Jared Bettcher rewrote history in the second round of the Tiger Invitational at the Grand National Lake Course.
Troy finished its round 11-under par after going 8-under on the back nine. The round of 277 is tied for the third lowest in school history and just one shot back of the top spot. The Trojans carded 23 birdies and three eagles during their round, with 14 birdies and an eagle on the back nine.
The Trojans are making a living on the par 5s as they are 22-under through the first two rounds with 15 birdies and five eagles combined.
Troy enters Tuesday's final round 10 shots back of Auburn for the team title, but 11 shots up on third place South Alabama and 12 strokes ahead of Georgia State and UNC Greensboro, who are tied for fourth. No. 45 Ole Miss is 23 shots behind Troy, while No. 46 Chattanooga is 30 strokes back of the Trojans.
Bettcher tied the Troy record for lowest round in school history after shooting a 7-under 65 with six birdies, an eagle and a bogey. It marked the second time in three rounds that Bettcher has shot a 65 as the sophomore from Auburn, Ala., also did so in the final round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Feb. 22.
He moved up 39 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 10th place and sits just four shots back on the individual leaders heading into Tuesday's final round.
Jake Tucker finds himself just one shot back of the individual lead in a tie for fourth place at 5-under for the tournament following a 2-under 70 Monday. Tucker made the turn at 2-over before making four birdies on the back nine, including two big ones on No. 16 and No. 18.
Tolver Dozier (T-19th) and Phillip Brennan (T-25th) both shot a 1-under 71 thanks to 11 combined birdies and an eagle from Brennan. Dozier made four straight birdies and five-of-six at one stretch on the back nine before ending the rounds with bogeys on his final two holes. Brennan had an eventful front nine with three birdies and an eagle before making the turn at 1-under.
Clayton Vannoy had one of three Troy eagles on the day as he pitched in from the bunker on No. 12. Vannoy, who is tied for 53rd place, wrapped up his day at 3-over.
It will be an all-Alabama final paring, as Troy, Auburn and South Alabama will hit the course at 9:15 a.m. for Tuesday's final 18 holes.
