No. 50 Men’s Golf in the Hunt Following Day One of Tiger Invitational

OPELIKA, Alabama – Jake Tucker fired a 3-under 69 to lead the No. 50 Troy men's golf team on the opening day of the Tiger Invitational at the Grand National Lake Course Sunday afternoon. Tucker is tied for second place while Troy is tied for fifth – just six shots of the pace and two strokes back of second.
Tucker raced out to 4-under par after his first seven holes as he eagled the par-5 No. 12 and followed with birdies on No. 14 and No. 16. He made the turn at 3-under before a birdie on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 9 closed out his day at 3-under.
Dozier carded a 37 on both sides of the course to finish 2-over for the day and in a tie for 18th place. He picked a pair of birdies to help balance out four bogeys in his round. Phillip Brennan had an up-and-down day for the Trojans as he dropped in four birdies and an eagle, however he also had five bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey. Brennan showed off his distance as he played the par 5s to a tune of 4-under par – second best in the field. He finished his day 4-over and tied for 40th.
Jared Bettcher and Clayton Vannoy shot matching 77s and ended day one in a tie for 49th place. Bettcher dropped in three birdies over the course of his round, while Vannoy had a pair of birdies towards the end of his round.
Auburn shot a 290 to take the lead after day one, while Ole Miss is four shots back in second. The Trojans along with VCU are tied for fifth following a 296, while Kansas State and Tulsa are tied for third after shooting 295.
Troy will open on the front nine for Monday's second round and will take the course with Tulsa and VCU beginning at 8:30 a.m.
