LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – UL Lafayette used small ball and the long ball to defeat Troy 6-2 at M.L. Tigue Moore Field on Saturday. With the win, the Ragin' Cajuns claim the series from the Trojans.
UL Lafayette (9-5, 2-0) tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on a squeeze bunt. The Cajuns would score the go-ahead run later in the inning. In the sixth, Dylan Butler launched a 2-1 offspeed pitch from reliever Marc Skinner over the wall in left field to give ULL the four run lead.
After UL Lafayette scored in the bottom of the first, Troy (7-7, 0-2) responded quickly. Trevin Hall tripled to start the second and scored on a ground ball from David Hall. The Trojans took the lead in the third when Logan Hill laced a two-out single up the middle scoring Clay Holcomb. Holcomb walked to lead off the game and has now reached base in 28 of his last 30 games.
Troy could manage just three hits in the game as Will Bacon (1-1) came on in relief of starter Greg Milhorn and pitched five hitless innings.
Grant Bennett (2-1) was saddled with his first loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Skinner pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and was charged with one run on two hits.
Troy and UL Lafayette will play the final game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game will air on WTBF 94.7 FM and be streamed live on TroyTrojans.com.
