Trojans Fall in Extra Innings in SBC Opener
3/6/2015 10:20:00 PM | Baseball
Troy (7-6, 0-1 Sun Belt) tied the game in the ninth on an RBI single from TJ Binder. Trailing 5-4, David Hall led off the inning with an infield single. Windham Jackson entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, Binder laced a 1-0 pitch past the diving second baseman to score Jackson.
The Trojans struck for three runs in the opening frame. Clay Holcomb led off the game with a single, stole second, then scored on a Nick Masonia single. The stolen base was the 54th of Holcomb's career moving him into sole possession of 9th all-time in Troy history. Logan Hill followed by blasting his third home run of the season; a two-run shot over the wall in left.
UL Lafayette (8-5, 1-0) countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Troy starter Corey Childress allowed five hits in the frame, but a strike out stranded two runners and preventing any more damage.
Trevin Hall handed the Trojans the lead in the third with his third home run of the season.
The Ragin' Cajuns reclaimed the lead when Blake Trahan launched a two-run homer just inside the foul pole in left field. In six innings of work, Childress allowed five runs, struck out four, but settled down to retire the final seven batters he faced. Lucas Brown and Jeremy McGowan (0-1) pitched well in relief, giving the Trojans to chance to tie the game.
David Hall finished the game 3-for-4; his 32nd career multi-hit game. Masonia and Trevin Hall recorded two hits each.
Troy has now dropped four straight games. The teams will play the second game of the three-game series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
