TROY, Alabama – Riding the wave of momentum from a second place finish at the Tiger Invitational, No. 35 Troy heads to the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend.
The Trojans made a significant jump of at least 10 spots in the BirdieFire and Golfstat national rankings following the Tiger Invitational as Troy picked up victories over a pair of teams ranked ahead of them; the Trojans were 14 shots better than No. 45 Ole Miss and 32 shots ahead of No. 46 Chattanooga.
Troy will be tested again as the field at the Seminole Intercollegiate features No. 1 Florida State, No. 6 South Florida, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 South Carolina, No. 23 Virginia, No. 32 Florida and No. 50 East Tennessee State. Also in the field are Cincinnati, George Washington, Illinois State, Jacksonville, James Madison, Mercer, Penn State and Western Kentucky.
Troy had success at last year's Seminole Intercollegiate as the Trojans combined for five rounds under par, including a pair of 4-under cards from Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker. In fact, Troy had the lowest 36-hole total on the final day of play en route to a tie for fifth place in the event.
Jared Bettcher paced the Trojans last year as he tied for 12th place overall after shooting even par for the tournament. Bettcher enters the weekend having shot a school record 65 in two of his past four rounds and leads Troy with a 72.71 stroke average for the year.
All five players in Troy's lineup for the Seminole Intercollegiate currently have stroke averages under 74 on the season and the Trojans are averaging a team card of 289.5 in their first two tournaments of the spring.
Tucker led the Trojans at the Tiger Invitational with a 4-under par, which was good for a tie for seventh place. Troy's lone southpaw swinger is close behind Bettcher with a 72.94 average for the year and has seen 88.2 percent of his rounds counted towards the team score.
Luke Moser, who didn't play at Auburn, returns to the lineup this weekend with his 73.64 stroke average and 92.9 scoring rate for the team. Moser leads the team with a 72.8 average during the opening round of tournaments this year.
Back-to-back top 25 finishes from Dozier has dropped his average down to 73.88 for the year, while a strong finish from Phillip Brennan at the Tiger Invitational (-1 over final two rounds) has him tied with Dozier on the season. Clayton Vannoy (75.38) will compete as an individual for the Trojans after playing in the lineup at Auburn.
The par-72 course is expected to play at 7,171 yards and Troy will tee off at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) on the back nine along with Jacksonville and Cincinnati.
