TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team scattered six hits but failed to score as Southern Miss took the series with a 5-0 win in Sunday's finale.
Â
Golden Eagles starter James McMahon (2-0) tossed the shutout, striking out eight on 113 pitches. Troy left a base runner stranded in five of the first six innings.
Â
Southern Miss (5-4-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Michael Sterling drove home the game's first run on a single to center. One batter later, Connor Barron plated the second run on a fielder's choice. Consecutive doubles from Matt Durst and Tim Lynch gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage and Barron added another with a solo home run in the fourth.
Â
Troy starter Tucker Simpson (1-2) allowed four earned runs over three innings of work. Simpson struck out two and walked two.
Â
Second baseman Nick Masonia gave Troy a spark with two outstanding defensive plays. With two outs in the first inning, Masonia made a leaping snare of a line drive, then he ended the fifth with an over-the-shoulder grab in shallow center.
Â
Ben Tidwell pitched four innings in relief. The left-hander allowed one run on two hits and struck out a pair. Freshman Perez Knowles tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Â
David Hall collected half of Troy's hits and finished the game 3-for-4. Masonia, Trevin Hall and Adam Tewskbury were the other Trojans to gathered hits in the contest.
Â
The Trojans (7-3) will travel to Montgomery on Tuesday to face Alabama State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
