Troy Men’s Hoops Falls to Georgia State in Final Home Game

TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team fell to Georgia State, 75-64, at Trojan Arena Saturday afternoon, on Senior Night. Musa Abdul-Aleem, one of two seniors, scored 12-straight points for the Trojans to close out the game on his way to a game-high 19 points, but was unable to find a way to win.
Freshman Wesley Person was the only other Trojan to score in double figures, as he poured in 12 points, which allowed him to set a new Troy Division I freshman scoring record with 387 points, breaking Robert Rushing's record of 385.
The loss officially eliminated Troy from Sun Belt tournament contention.
Troy's second senior, Kevin Thomas pulled down a team-high six rebounds and now has 227 rebounds this season, tied for the sixth most in a single season in Troy's Division I history.
Troy (10-18, 5-14) was unable to take a lead throughout the contest as it quickly fell behind to Georgia State, 17-9 in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Panthers went on a quick 9-0 run, but Troy wouldn't back down as it countered it with a 7-0 run of its own, making the score 26-18 with 6:34 to go in the first half.
Lights out shooting by Georgia State ended the half, which allowed it to take a 39-25 lead at the break. The Panthers opened the first half of play shooting 18-of-27 (66.7 percent) while the Trojans shot 9-of-24 (37.5 percent).
Despite a rocky first half, Troy came out in the second and shot 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) as it outscored Georgia State, 39-36.
Georgia State opened the half with two straight buckets, holding Troy scoreless until the 16:06 mark. The Trojans and Panthers traded buckets until Troy went on a 17-7 run to pull the game within 12 at 62-50, but couldn't find a way to make the final push.
Georgia State (20-9, 13-5) was led by Ryan Harrow, who paced the Panthers with 17 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Markus Crider was the only other Panther player in double figures, as he scored 13 points, while reeling in a game-high six rebounds. The Trojan defense was able to hold R.J. Hunter, the Sun Belt's second leading scorer, to a season-low eight points.
In the game, Troy shot 23-of-47 (48.9 percent) in thanks to its second half showing. Abdul-Aleem shot 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Chris Bilbo and Kelton Ford each shot 3-of-4 from the field on their way to seven points, apiece.
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they travel to South Alabama for the season finale, which will tip off at 4:05 p.m. at the Mitchell Center.
