Bettcher’s Record Round Paces No. 41 Troy on Final Day of Bayou City Collegiate Championship
2/22/2015 5:48:00 PM | Golf (M)
HUMBLE, Texas – Troy sophomore Jared Bettcher shot a 7-under 65 in Sunday's final round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Houston. Bettcher's round tied Kevin Blanton (1995) for the lowest in Troy history.
The Auburn, Ala., native carded five birdies and an eagle during his record setting round as he catapulted 43 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 36th place. An NCAA qualifier last year, Bettcher shot a 66 last season, which is a Troy record for lowest opening round score.
The Trojans finished seventh overall – two shots out of fifth – as they wrapped up the weekend 6-over par as a team. No. 9 South Carolina won the team title, while Sam Houston State was second and No. 8 Baylor finished third. Troy finished 23 shots ahead of UL Lafayette, which was only other Sun Belt team in the field.
Low numbers littered Trojan scorecards on Sunday as Troy's five golfers accounted for 16 birdies and one eagle. The Trojans finished with 45 birdies over the three rounds, good for fourth in the field.
Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker both shot even par in the final round, but got there in different ways. Dozier, who tied for 20th overall, finished with two birdies and two bogeys in the round, while Tucker (T23rd) carded four birdies and four bogeys.
Luke Moser and Phillip Brennan tied for 47th after shooting a 75 and 76, respectively. Moser picked up three birdies during the final round, while Brennan was on the low side of two holes.
Troy returns to the links March 8-10 at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, which was the site of Bettcher's 6-under 66 last year.
