TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's golf team opens its spring season this weekend at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship in Humble, Texas. The par 72, 6,982-yard Tournament Course at the Golf Club of Houston will play host to the 15-team field.
The Trojans enter the tournament ranked No. 42 in the latest Birdie Fire national rankings, while No. 7 Baylor, No. 16 South Carolina, No. 31 Houston and No. 47 Arkansas will also be in the field.
"It's been a long layoff and our guys are ready to get back on the course," head coach Matt Terry said. "This tournament will be a good measuring stick for us going forward, but we just have to play our game and not let the course play us."
Terry will send out a familiar lineup for the initial tournament of the spring as Jared Bettcher, Luke Moser, Tolver Dozier, Phillip Brennan and Jake Tucker will take the course together as they did in the four fall events.
"It's a pro course and we are going to have to go out and plan clean rounds," Terry said. "If we can eliminate the three-putts and double-bogeys, we should have a successful weekend."
The Trojans finished the fall with a 291.5 stroke average to go along with four top 10 and 13 top 25 individuals finishes. Troy finished no worse than fourth in its four events and posted a 37-9 record.
"These guys understand with what we went through last year, that you can't focus on where we are ranked or what we are doing two weeks from now," Terry said. "We have to worry about what we can do today to improve. If we can do that, we can play with anyone in the country."
Bettcher paced the Trojans with a 72.64 average and a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall. He opened the fall with a third place finish at The Invitational at Kiawah and ended with a fifth place effort at The Intercollegiate.
The Trojans shot eight rounds in the 60s over the course of the fall with two each from Bettcher, Tucker and Brennan. Moser proved to be the wild card for Troy in the fall as he posted a 73.45 average after finishing last year with a 78.9 mark. A sophomore, Moser had 10 of his 11 rounds in the fall counted towards the team score.
Tucker had a consistent fall as he finished with a 73.64 stroke average and three top 25 finishes. Brennan led the Trojans with a fourth place performance at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic and finished the fall with a 74.0 stroke average, while Dozier posted a 74.45 average.
The Trojans open the Bayou City Collegiate Championship on the back nine at 9 a.m. and will be paired with Arkansas and New Mexico State.
