TROY, Alabama – Musa Abdul-Aleem's play down the stretch sealed the deal as the Troy men's basketball team defeated Georgia Southern, 65-62, at Hanner Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
Abdul-Aleem scored six-straight points for Troy and gave it the final lead with a second-chance bucket with 32 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession on the defensive end of the court, Abdul-Aleem drew a charge, and the Eagles were unable to find a way to score, allowing the Trojans to hand them their second loss at home this season.
Troy (10-15, 5-11) never led by more than four in the game, but its relentless play throughout proved to be enough as it completed the sweep of the Eagles.
Abdul-Aleem paced the Trojans with a game-high 25 points, 19 of which came in the second half. He shot 9-of-16 from the floor while reeling in a game-high 12 boards, earning him his second career double-double.
Kevin Thomas had a near perfect night as he shot 4-of-4 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe, on his way to 11 points, while scooping up nine boards, five on the offensive end of the court. Chris Bilbo also scored in double-figures with 10 points in the win, dishing out a team-high four assists.
Troy went into the break leading Georgia Southern, 32-29, thanks to a 13-2 run to close out the half.
To open the second half of play, the Eagles quickly pulled ahead, 34-32, but a quick 6-3 run gave Troy a slight 38-37 edge. Back and fourth play ensued for most of the contest, until the Trojans went on a 9-2 run to regain the lead, 54-52.
Bilbo converted a huge four-point play and then Abdul-Aleem got a second chance basket off a missed three to give Troy its largest lead at 60-56 with 4:46 to play.
With Georgia Southern trailing 60-56 with five minutes to play, Abdul-Aleem scored three straight buckets for the Trojans and Kevin Thomas put the game just out of reach with a free throw as Troy escaped Statesboro with the win.
Georgia Southern (18-6, 11-4) was led by Mike Hughes who shot 5-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range, on his way to 14 points. Jelani Hewitt and Angel Matias chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Eagles tallied 24 offensive rebounds, two more than their buckets made.
In the game, Troy outshot Georgia Southern 42.6 percent (23-of-54) to 35.5 percent (22-of-62). From downtown, both squads sunk seven treys on the night. Over the course of the game, the Trojans and Eagles were tied 10 times, with 12 lead changes.
Troy returns home Saturday to face UALR. The Trojans are slated to tip off at 4:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's game. Troy will enter Saturday one game behind UALR who sits in eighth place in the Sun Belt standings.
