Troy Soccer Starts Sun Belt Conference Tournament with Shutout Victory
11/4/2015 6:26:00 PM | Soccer
EMERSON, Georgia – The Troy soccer team opened up the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 7 Georgia Southern on Wednesday at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Ga.
Â
Troy (14-4-1, 6-2-1 Sun Belt) and Georgia Southern (6-11-2, 3-5-1 Sun Belt) both didn't have a shot in the game until the 22nd minute when Jasmine Fahrnbauer scored the game-winning goal off an Alissa Jones corner kick from the left side of the field.
Â
"Our decision making was fairly poor tonight," Jason Hamilton said. I don't think the score reflects how either team played. We definitely have to fix some things and do a little bit better moving forward if we want to stay in this tournament, but a win is a win and you have to grind those out sometimes.
Â
The Trojans didn't score again until the second half, but scored two goals within five minutes. Abby Reynolds gave Troy a 2-0 advantage in the 77th minute when she took a Claire Taylor pass into the middle field and found the back of the net after breaking away from the Eagles defenders.
Â
Then in the 82nd minute Natalie Melillo scored her first goal of the season when she ripped a shot from the right side of the field that went to the left of the keeper to put the Trojans up 3-0.
Â
The All-Sun Belt First Team goalkeeper, Mikki Lewis (12-4-1), earned her ninth shutout of the season and had three saves in the match.
Â
Troy fired nine shots in the match and landed six on goal. Melillo lead all players with three shots and two on goal. Fahrnbauer had two and four other Trojans had one shot.
Â
Georgia Southern was held to just five shots the entire match; four of them came in the second half.
Â
The Trojans will return to the pitch on Friday at 6 p.m. CT and will play the winner of the No. 3 Texas State and No. 6 Georgia State game.
