EMERSON, Georgia – The Troy soccer team fell to Georgia State in a shootout that ended 4-2 on Friday night at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Ga.
Â
Troy (14-4-2, 6-2-1 Sun Belt) had its first game ever go past overtime as both teams were knotted at two when the second overtime horn sounded. However, there had to be a winner to advance into the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which meant there would be a shootout.
Â
Both teams went par for par on the first two shots however Georgia State (11-5-4, 4-4-1 Sun Belt) scored on their third shot, but Jasmine Fahrnbauer couldn't convert on the third shot for the Trojans and hit the right post to keep the shootout score at 3-2.
Â
Troy needed to convert on its last shot to keep the game alive as Georgia State scored to put the shootout score at 4-2. Kirsten Rendall nicked the left post for the Trojans fourth shot, which ended the game.
Â
"That's a tough way to end the season and it's a tough way to lose a game on penalties (shootouts)," Jason Hamilton said. "But someone's got to be a winner and move on. I thought we played good and I thought we executed our gameplan very well. That's how it is with posteseason, you have to leave everything on the line."
Â
Troy took a 1-0 advantage in the 37th minute when Rendall took a free kick from midfield that found Jasmine Fahrnbauer who headed it forward to Annabell Simpson who finished the job and found the back of the net.
Â
Georgia State tied the game at one when Suzanne Arafa scored from right outside the box on a rebound off Mikki Lewis in the 50th minute.
Â
Alissa Jones led the way for Troy as she had four of the Trojans 16 shots. Simpson, Rendall, Reynolds and Brittany Yoder ended with two. Four other Trojans had one shot each.
Â
Mikki Lewis (12-4-2) ended the game with four saves and one goal allowed.
