Â
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team will open Sun Belt Championships play on Friday when the Trojans take on Appalachian State at 11 a.m. CT inside Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga. The match can be seen on ESPN3.
Â
Troy, the tournament's No. 7 seed, will be taking on No. 2 seed Appalachian State with a spot in Saturday's semifinals on the line. The winner will face the winner of Texas State and South Alabama at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Â
Troy (14-17, 7-9) lost six of its final seven regular season matches, including its most recent contest, a four-set loss to Georgia Southern in Hanner Fieldhouse last Friday. Prior to that match, Troy swept Little Rock in Trojan Arena on Senior Day. Before their most recent stretch, the Trojans had won eight straight matches.
Â
The Trojans are led by a trio of seniors in Ali Dowdall, Darby Griff and Blair Winston. Dowdall leads Troy, and the Sun Belt, with 578 digs this season, just 22 away from tying her own single-season school record. Griff leads Troy, and the Sun Belt, with 111 total blocks and is already Troy's career blocks leader. Winston leads the Trojans with 365 kills, tying her career high, while her 3.12 kills per set rank in the Sun Belts top 10.
Â
Appalachian State (20-7, 13-3), like Troy, struggled down the stretch, losing their final three matches of the regular season. Two of those losses came to regular season Sun Belt champion Arkansas State, and the other came on the road at Little Rock.
Â
Troy and Appalachian State played just one time this season, on September 18, in the first Sun Belt match of the season for each team. Troy won the first two sets inside Trojan Arena in that match, but the Mountaineers came back to win the next three to take the five-set decision.
Â
The Trojans did not qualify for the Sun Belt Championships last season, but in each of the two years prior they won in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals. Troy has never advanced past the semifinals in the Sun Belt tournament.
