Troy Closes Regular Season Looking for Better Seeding

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team plays its final regular season match on Friday when the Trojans travel to take on Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga., at 4 p.m. CT.

Troy (14-16, 7-8) currently sits is seventh place in the Sun Belt standings and can't fall any lower than that. However, Troy can finish as high as fifth place with a win on Friday and some help from other matches.Â

Troy currently sits just a half game behind South Alabama (13-12, 7-7) and a full game behind Little Rock (12-13, 8-7), and can catch both by the end of the weekend. All of South Alabama's and Little Rock's remaining matches are against teams above them in the standings.

Troy is coming off of a home win over Little Rock last Sunday. Blair Winston led Troy with 13 kills for the second straight match as Troy swept Little Rock, a team it hadn't beaten since 2012, and snapped a five-match losing streak.

Winston leads the Trojans with 353 kills and 3.12 kills per set average this season. Defensively, Ali Dowdall leads Troy, and the Sun Belt with 559 digs, while Darby Griff leads Troy, and the Sun Belt, with 110 total blocks.

Georgia Southern (9-18, 4-11), which is hosting next week's Sun Belt Championships, is already locked in as the tournament's No. 8 seed. The Eagles won in five sets at Georgia State last Saturday in their most recent match. However, prior to that win, Georgia Southern had lost five straight matches.

Official seedings for the Sun Belt tournament will be released on Sunday after all matches in the league are completed. The single-elimination tournament begins with quarterfinals on Friday at Hanner Fieldhouse.
