Â
STATESBORO, Georgia – The Troy volleyball team closed its regular season on Friday with a 3-1 (29-31, 25-16, 25-11, 28-26) loss to Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse. With the loss, Troy will be the No. 7 seed at the Sun Belt Championships, which begin in one week, also at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Â
Troy (14-17, 7-9) got 12 kills from Blair Winston, giving the senior 365 kills on the season to tie a career high. Winston also recorded 11 digs for a double-double.
Â
Ali Dowdall led the Trojans with 19 digs while Avalon Nero was also in double figures with 12 digs.
Â
Troy took control of the match early, leading much of the way in the first set, including with multiple set points at 24-20. However, Georgia Southern (10-18, 5-11) fought off the set points, and actually had four of their own. With the Eagles up 29-28, Troy got two kills from Winston and an Eagle attack error to win the first set, 31-29.
Â
Georgia Southern, however, took control of the next two sets and held Troy to -.100 and -.160 attack percentages, respectively, in 25-16 and 25-11 wins.
Â
The Trojans then posted their best attack percentage of the match with a .200 mark in the fourth set and led by four points late, 22-18. It was then that the Eagles scored six of seven points to take a 24-23 lead before winning the clinching set, 28-26.
Â
Megan Chevalier led Georgia Southern with 12 kils and a .320 attack percentage. She helped the Eagles hit .182 as a team while Troy posted just a .059 attack percentage.
Â
Troy now awaits its match up for next week's Sun Belt Championships. The official seedings and match times will be released on Sunday after regular season play has concluded for the entire conference. The single-elimination tournament begins next Friday in Statesboro, Ga.
