Moreno, Samaha Beat Nation’s No. 27 Pair, Advance at ITA All-American
10/6/2015 10:32:00 PM | Tennis (M)
TULSA, Oklahoma – Troy men's tennis' Pablo Moreno and Giovani Samaha won a pair of doubles matches, including one over the 27th-ranked team in the nation, to advance in the qualifying draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Moreno and Samaha, the No. 1 doubles pair on Troy's 2015 Sun Belt Championship team, grinded out back-to-back three-set wins on Monday, including one against a nationally-ranked doubles team from Texas A&M. With the wins, Moreno and Samaha are just two wins away from becoming the first players in Troy men's tennis history to play in the main draw at the prestigious ITA All-American Championships.
The duo started the day with a first-round, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (2), win over Dave Bacalla and Chas Kissell of Valparaiso. That earned them a trip into the second round where they took on No. 27 Oscar Jangling and Shane Vinsant of Texas A&M, who were playing their first match of the day.
The fresh legs were an advantage early, but Moreno and Samaha fought back and won the match, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6).
That win put the Troy duo into the round of 32 where they will take on Charlotte's Vikram Hundal and Jordi Massalle Ferrer at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. A win would put the Troy pair into the round of 16 against a team from either Dartmouth or San Francisco. That winner will earn one of eight spots available in the weekend's main draw.
