Troy Soccer Draws with Little Rock on Senior Day, Clinches Second in Sun Belt
10/25/2015 4:47:00 PM | Soccer
TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex with a 0-0 tie against Little Rock, but managed to clinch the second place seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Â
The 2015 seniors, the winningest class in Troy soccer history, were honored before kickoff.
Â
Troy (13-4-1, 6-2-1 Sun Belt) maintained possession throughout the game and fired 19 shots, but only five landed on goal.
Â
"I thought our girls played well in certain areas," Jason Hamilton said. "There were some places we could've done better. When you have 19 shots you have to be a little bit more opportunistic around the goal."
Â
The Trojans were called offside three times during the match, but none bigger than one in the 30th minute that wiped away a Chelsey Williams score that would've given the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Troy took three shots in the first overtime and four shots in the second overtime. However, only two of them were on goal.
Â
Mikki Lewis (11-4-1) recorded her eighth shutout of the season and recorded four saves. The Trojan defense only allowed five shots for the duration of the match.
Â
The Little Rock (8-6-5, 3-2-4 Sun Belt) goalkeeper, Sara Small, had five saves in the match and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Â
Of the 19 shots the Trojans took, 12 of them came from the seniors. Alissa Jones led all players with six, followed by Jasmine Fahrnbauer with three and Williams, who took two. Kirsten Rendall also took a shot off a free kick in the 67th minute that went high.
Â
Troy will return to the pitch in Atlanta as the number two seed to face the seventh seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, which will begin November 4th.
