DULUTH, Georgia — Led by a pair in the top eight, the Troy men's golf team is in third place following Monday's opening two rounds of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at the Berkley Hills Country Club.
Paced by a 3-under par 69 by Jared Bettcher, a 1-under 71 from Clayton Vannoy and Luke Moser and an eagle from Cam Norman, the Trojans fired a 5-under 283 in the second round to move up three spots on the leaderboard into third.
Vannoy will enter Tuesday's final round tied for fifth place at 4-under after two rounds. The Troy junior opened the day with a 3-under 69 thanks to six birdies; he is third in the field with 10 birdies over the opening two rounds.
Bettcher is a shot back of Vannoy tied for eighth following an even round to open the day and his 69 in round two. Troy golfers have now combined for 10 rounds in the 60s through the opening 10 rounds of the season.
Moser shaved three strokes off his opening round tally to shoot 1-under on his second trip through the course. Troy's stroke leader coming into the tournament is tied for 22nd place, but just four shots out of the top 10.
Cam Norman eagled the par-5 No. 10 en route to an even card in the second round. He opened with a 2-over 74 and sits in a tie for 32nd place, while Calum Masters is tied for 61st place at 7-over through two rounds. Playing as an individual, Sean Stone is tied for 47th place thanks to three birdies in the opening round and an eagle on No. 10 in the afternoon.
Lipscomb leads the 14-team field thanks to the strong play of individual leader Dawson Armstrong, who shot a 12-under 132. The Bisons lead South Florida by 10 shots, while Troy is one shot up on UNC Greensboro and four up on host Georgia State. The field features two top 50 teams —No. 19 South Florida and No. 35 College of Charleston — and eight teams ranked in the top 100 in the latest Golfweek rankings; Troy is currently ranked 75th nationally.
Troy will play with Lipscomb, South Florida and UNC Greensboro in Tuesday's final round; the foursome is set to tee off at 8:05 (CDT).
