Troy Cross Country Set for JSU Foothills Invitational Saturday
10/1/2015 2:20:00 PM | Cross Country
OXFORD, Alabama – Troy University's men's and women's cross country teams will return to Oxford Lake Park for the second time this year to compete in Jacksonville State University's Foothills Invitational on Saturday, October 3. The men's 8K will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 9:30 a.m.
Coming off a recovery weekend, the Trojans will travel a well-rested, smaller squad looking to make adjustments heading into next week's meet, which will serve as the precursor to the Sun Belt Championships. This year's edition of the JSU Foothills Invitational will feature 15 teams, including conference foes Georgia State and Georgia Southern and in-state competition from Alabama A&M, Auburn, Birmingham Southern and Tuskegee.
"We're mostly looking at this meet as a tune-up for those who would like to get another race under their belts," head coach Elliott Blount said. "And for those who have competed in most of the meets leading up to this point or are contending with nagging injuries, this is an opportunity for them to rest up for our next meet, which is the last one before we compete at conference."
On the women's side, Troy will look for leadership from senior Julia Ostendorf, who led the team in a personal-best 5K time of 18:40.68 at last year's JSU Foothills Invitational. She will be joined by junior Rae Leach, sophomores Naomi Sheppard and Sara Zylstra, and the Bokenfohr twins, juniors Katrina and Kristina.
For the men, freshman Brennan Garriques and sophomore Dylan Ogburn will aim to repeat as Troy's top runners after clipping through the 8K finish line nearly simultaneously (26:32.2 for Garriques; 26:32.75 for Ogburn) at the University of Florida's Mountain Dew Invitational last week. Freshman Ryan DeGale, sophomore Eric Schueller and juniors Tim Bulger and Sean Kent will round out the men's squad.
In 2014, the Trojan men and women both took fourth at the JSU Foothills Invitational. The meet was won by Georgia State's women, whose runners took the top four spots ahead of Ostendorf in fifth, and Austin Peay's men, led by Daniel Hamm in first overall.
Stay tuned for final results, which will be posted on troytrojans.com. Fans can keep up with the action by following Troy track and field and cross country on Twitter @TroyTrojanXC_TF and Instagram @troytrojanstfxc.
