Troy's Streak Snapped at League-Leading UALR
1/22/2015 8:32:00 PM | Basketball (W)
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – After a poor shooting first half, the Troy women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped against UALR, 82-56, at the Jack Stephens Center on Thursday night. UALR won its ninth straight game and remained undefeated in Sun Belt play.
Troy (11-6, 6-2) shot just 6-of-28 (21 percent) in the first half, including a stretch of nearly 16 minutes without a made bucket. After leading 10-8 with 15:54 to go, Troy didn't make another shot from the field until Lacey Buchanon beat the buzzer from near half court.
Troy trailed 42-18 at the break as UALR shot nearly 50 percent (16-of-33) in the opening half. Before the buzzer-beater, Troy missed 18 straight shots from the field and made just five free throws.
The second half was very close, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Ronita Garrett led all scorers with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, including 16 points and seven rebounds in the second half.
At one point, Garrett scored eight straight points for Troy, but the lead only got down to as little as 26 points when Dajia Williams hit a buzzer-beater in the second half.
UALR (15-2, 8-0) had four score in double figures, led by Shanity James and Taylor Gault who each had 14 points. James posted a double-double with 10 rebounds as UALR outrebounded Troy, 42-35.
Each side had turnover problems as Troy coughed it up 26 times and UALR did so 23 times. UALR took better advantage of the mistakes, outscoring Troy 34-20 in points off turnovers.
The loss ended Troy's six-game winning streak, which tied for the longest in the program's Division I era (1993-present). Troy's 6-2 start to Sun Belt play is still the best since joining the league 10 years ago.
Troy now turns its attention to second place Arkansas State, who visits Trojan Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Red Wolves loss at UL Lafayette on Thursday night and are now 7-2 in Sun Belt play, meaning Saturday's winner will be in sole possession of second place in the Sun Belt.
