Troy Can't Overcome Second Half Woes, Falls at UALR
1/22/2015 11:01:00 PM | Basketball (M)
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – Second half woes were too much to overcome as the Troy men's basketball team fell to UALR at the Jack Stephens Center, 73-65, on Thursday night.
Â
Chris Bilbo led Troy with 15 points, his first time leading the Trojans. Meanwhile John Walton III earned his first career double-double performance with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Â
Troy (7-10, 2-6) led 34-25 at the break, but UALR opened the second half on a 20-2 to take a 45-36 lead, which was halted when Wesley Person sank a long trey. In the run, UALR shot 7-of-8 from the field, including a 3-of-4 showing from downtown. Troy couldn't find its groove as it went 1-of-8 from the floor.
Â
Troy seemed to have found its momentum as it sank a few quick buckets to trail 49-46, but UALR repeatedly had an answer as it went shot-for-shot with Troy.
Â
Troy was able to make it a two-point game at 55-53 with 6:16 to go, but UALR went on a 10-0 run to give itself a cushioned lead at 65-53. Walton halted the run as he slammed in a dunk. Troy couldn't chip away at UALR's lead in the final minutes, despite hot shooting by Bilbo and Walton.
Â
Kelton Ford hit a deep 3-pointer to give Troy a chance at 71-65, but Troy ran out of time as it dropped the contest, 73-65.
Â
In the first half, Troy shot 6-of-14 from long range while holding UALR to 2-of-8 from beyond the arc, 9-of-24 overall. Troy never trailed in the half, despite having a 2:34 scoring drought.
Â
In the game, Musa Abdul-Aleem added 14 points off the bench while freshman Person tallied his 14th game in double figures, as he had 10 on the night. Walton and Bilbo each shot 50 percent from the floor on the night, while Troy shot 23-of-56 (41 percent) from the floor.
Â
In the game, Josh Hagins paced UALR (7-11, 2-6) with 22 points as he shot 8-of-12 from the floor, including a 3-of-4 showing from 3-point range, while dishing out five assists. Roger Woods added 19 points, shooting 6-of-10 on the night while reeling in a team-high 10 rebounds.
Â
Troy managed to outscore UALR 25-24 in the paint and 16-11 from the bench. Troy struggled at the charity stripe, as it shot 10-of-21.
