Troy Men’s Hoops Can’t Halt Second Half Run, Falls to Arkansas State
1/24/2015 7:06:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 25-5 run by Arkansas State late in the second half, as it fell to the Red Wolves 64-55 Saturday.
Three Trojans tallied double figures in the loss, including Kevin Thomas who earned his 10th career double-double with a game-high 20 points and team-high 11 rebounds, nine of which were offensive. Freshman Wesley Person chipped in 14 points in his 15th game in double figures. Chris Bilbo also added 11 points for Troy.
Troy (7-11, 2-7 SBC) led 30-25 coming out of the break and buckets by Person and Thomas allowed it to take a 10-point lead at 35-25. After both teams exchanged a couple of buckets, Arkansas State responded with a 25-5 run allowing it to take a 54-43 lead over the Trojans with 5:43 to go.
Person snapped the run with a trey, but the Red Wolves responded with a three of their own. The Trojans were unable to muster much in the following minutes as the Red Wolves held on for the win.
Opening the game, Troy and Arkansas State traded buckets as it was all tied up at 8 at the first media timeout. The Red Wolves went on an 8-0 run to take a 14-8 lead, while holding the Trojans scoreless for just over four minutes.
In the first half, both offenses struggled. With 5:53 remaining in the first, Thomas was shooting 4-of-7 from the field, while the rest of the squad shot 2-of-20. Bilbo was the only Trojan to hit a trey in the first half, as Troy went 1-of-13 from long range. Despite the poor offensive showing in the first, Troy led 30-25.
Arkansas State (9-10, 4-6) was led by Anthony Livingston as he paced the Red Wolves with 16 points, while reeling in a game-high 13 rebounds. Cameron Golden led the offensive charge in the second-half run for ASU, as all 12 of his points came after the break.
In the game, Troy shot 21-of-67 (31.3 percent) from the floor. From 3-point range, Troy shot 5-of-26 (19.2 percent), despite Person tallying four. The Trojans out-rebounded Arkansas State, 43-40, as it held a 17-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
