Trojans Drop Tight 69-64 Loss to App State

TROY, Alabama – Despite forcing three turnovers in the final minute, the Troy men's basketball team was unable to find a way a to get a shot to fall as it fell to Appalachian State, 69-64, Monday night at Trojan Arena.
The Trojans (7-9, 2-5) were able to out-shoot the Mountaineers, 40.3 percent to 38.3 percent from the floor, but App State's 11-of-26 showing from 3-point range proved to be too much for Troy to overcome.
Three Trojans tallied double figures as Wesley Person led Troy with 15 points while Aaron Ariri reeled in a game and career-high 11 boards. Kevin Thomas added 13 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor, and Musa Abdul-Aleem chipped in 11.
After leading 34-29 at the half, Troy came out hustling up and down the court, but their aggressive play led to a slew of turnovers and fouls. Momentum shifted towards App State, who was able to take back a 46-40 lead as the Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run, while holding the Trojans to 0-of-6 shooting on a 2:31 scoring drought.
The Trojans found a way to gel together on offense as it spread the ball around, allowing them to chip away at the Mountaineer's lead to make it a one-point game, 62-61, with 2:40 to play.
Frank Eaves, who tallied a game-high 29 points on the night, sunk a long trey at 65-61, which the Trojans couldn't overcome. Troy came up with three big stops, but late 3-point attempts by Person and Abdul-Aleem spun out of the rim.
Appalachian State started off hot from long range, as it quickly took a 12-3 lead, while holding Troy to a three-minute scoring drought. Troy responded going 4-of-5 from the floor to chip away at App State's lead, 17-13. The Trojans got the energy flowing in their direction as they took their first lead at 28-27.
After a brief drought by both squads, Ariri gave Troy a spark as he started and ended a 7-0 with two putback dunks to give Troy a 34-29 advantage heading into the break. The Trojans were dominating the paint, outscoring the Mountaineers, 18-8, and had a mere two turnovers.
App State (6-10, 3-4) was led by Eaves, who shot 8-of-16 from the floor, in large part to 6-of-10 showing from beyond the arc. Eaves shot 7-of-9 from the free throw line, 3-of-4 in the final minute. Michael Obacha tallied a team-high eight rebounds.
In the game, Troy shot 25-of-62 from the floor, but couldn't find its way from 3-point range as it shot 6-of-24. The Trojans outscored App in the paint, 26-22, but tallied only eight points from close range in the second half.
Troy hits the Troy as it takes on UALR on Thursday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans return home to Trojan Arena on Saturday, January 24, for a matchup against Arkansas State at 4:15 p.m.
