Troy Survives North Florida to Win Eighth Straight
9/21/2014 5:32:00 PM | Soccer
MOBILE, Alabama – Junior Alissa Jones blasted the game-winning goal from 18 yards out to lift the Troy University soccer team to a 1-0 win over North Florida in the Jaguar Classic finale in Mobile on Sunday.
Jones received a pass from Chelsey Williams in the 102nd minute and beat North Florida goalkeeper Megan Dorsey to the far post. It was Jones' eighth goal of the season, a career high. It was Williams' third assist of the season.
The Trojans (8-2) extend their program-best winning streak to eight games and set a new program unbeaten streak mark. The win caps a solid non-conference slate for Troy as the team will open Sun Belt Conference play against South Alabama on Friday.
"It was a tough weekend for us. We didn't play our best soccer, but we pushed through and came out with two wins. That speaks to the character of this team," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "We start conference play this week, so all the records are cleared and every game means something."
Each team traded shots in the first half with freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis coming up with three fantastic saves to deny North Florida a goal. Troy's best opportunity came on a Jasmine Fahrnbauer header in the 34th minute, but the attempt sailed high.
With time running out in regulation, the Trojans fired off a barrage of shots, but Megan Dorsey was solid in the net for North Florida (1-8). She finished the game with nine saves.
Lewis was equally as good for Troy, earning four saves en route to her third shutout of the season.
Troy outshot North Florida 17-11, including 10-4 in shots on goal. Jones was credited with nine shots in the game, six on goal. It was the first overtime win for the Trojans since they defeated South Alabama 2-1 on October 26, 2012.
The Trojans will return to Mobile on Friday to face South Alabama in a 7 p.m. kickoff to open conference play. The Troy University SGA and Troy soccer team are sponsoring a FREE fan bus to Mobile that will depart for the game at 4 p.m. To sign up for contact assistant coach Stephanie Demake at sdemake@troy.edu.
