TROY, Alabama – The Troy University soccer team will open its Sun Belt Conference schedule on the road against in-state rival South Alabama at 7 p.m. on Friday at The Cage. Fans can follow the action via live stats by visiting the soccer schedule page at TroyTrojans.com.
The Trojans (8-2) enter the game riding a program-best eight-game win streak while South Alabama (8-2) has won its last six and eight of its last nine.
Junior Chelsey Williams enters the contest with four goals on the year and is just two shy of tying Jill Pinder for most all-time in Troy history. The Panama City, Fla., native is also three points shy on tying Mary Morris' school record of 53 career points.
Goalkeeper Mikki Lewis has earned all eight of the team's wins in the net, the most by a freshman since Ashley Branham in 2008. Lewis has led the team to three clean sheets and recorded 26 saves on the year.
The game is not only a battle for a spot atop the Sun Belt Conference standings, but also a clash between two of the nation's top scorers.
Troy junior Alissa Jones is tied for the NCAA lead with five game-winning goals and has scored eight on the season. She is currently eighth nationally in total points (20) and 11th in total goals (8). Jones blasted the game-winner in the 102nd minute of a double-overtime contest against North Florida on Sunday. The shutout win was the fifth of the year for the Trojans.
The Trojans will look to contain reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week Charde Hannah, who scored four goals and picked up an assist in South Alabama's win over Francis Marion. Hannah is second in the country in points (2.70 pg), fourth in goals (1.10 pg) and 11th in game-winning goals (3). USA sophomore Sarah Hay is the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11 saves in a pair of shutout wins.
Jones has been assisted on several occasions by sophomore Annabell Simpson, who ranks 51st in the country with five assists. Junior Jasmine Fahrnbauer and freshman Natalie Melillo have also been active in the Trojans attack. Combined the pair has recorded six goals and two assists.
Troy is 5-4-1 all-time against the Jaguars, including wins in the last two meetings and four of the last five. The Trojans defeated the eventual Sun Belt Conference tournament champions 1-0 at the Troy Soccer Complex last season.
