Second Half Surge Leads Troy Past UAB
9/14/2014 4:43:00 PM | Soccer
Troy, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team won its sixth consecutive game as Jasmine Fahrnbauer scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Trojans past UAB 2-1 on Sunday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
Â
Trailing 1-0, Troy (6-2) was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out in the 53rd minute. Alissa Jones served the ball into the box where Fahrnbauer headed it into the back of the net to tie the game. It was the third assist of the season for Jones.
Â
In the 84th minute, UAB (2-5) attempted to clear a shot by Chelsey Williams but the ball fell to Fahrnbauer just outside the 18-yard box. The junior midfielder fired a shot into the top corner of the net. The two goals give Fahrnbauer three on the season and seven for her career.
Â
"I'm very proud of how we fought back," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "We made a mistake 15 minutes into the game. To fight back from that, knowing that we're playing a very good team, shows a lot of character."
Â
UAB scored its goal in the 15th minute after Paige Hanks beat Mikki Lewis in a one-on-one situation. It was just the second goal Lewis has allowed in the last six games.
Â
The win extends Troy's program-best winning streak to six. The school mark for longest unbeaten streak is seven. The squad is also 5-0 at home this season.
Â
Troy outshot UAB 14-10 for the game and 7-2 in shots on goal. Jones fired off a team-high five shots.
Â
The Trojans will travel to Mobile, Ala., to face Francis Marion on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Jaguar Classic hosted by South Alabama. Troy will face North Florida on Sunday at 11 a.m. to wrap up tournament play.
