TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team topped in-state rival Jacksonville State, 3-1, on Friday at the Troy Soccer Complex. The win is the fifth straight for the Trojans, the longest winning streak in program history. Troy has now won four of its last five matches against Jacksonville State.
Â
Troy's five consecutive wins snaps the program record set several times, most recently in 2010.
Â
"Being well rested helped a lot. We played a lot of game to open the season, so having some time off really helped," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "If you can get on a winning streak, it's going to help your confidence. We've got UAB coming up on Sunday, which is probably going to be the toughest game of the year for us. Hopefully, we can keep that confidence and continue to play well."
Â
The Trojans opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Annabell Simpson passed to Mallary Hedden, who was near midfield. Hedden then played the ball long to Natalie Melillo, who was making a run into the box. The Jacksonville State goalkeeper got just enough of Melillo's one-touch chip to keep it from falling into the net, but the parry fell right to Melillo, who headed home her third goal of the season.
Â
While the first half was a battle for possession, Troy's halftime adjustments paid off early. In the 47th minute, Simpson played a beautiful ball into the box to Chelsey Williams who found the back of the net past a diving goalkeeper. It marked the first multi-assist game of Simpson's career. Williams' goal was the 20th of her career, moving her past Erin Doud for sole possession of third all-time in Troy history. She also took a career-high seven shots in the game. Williams has been credited with 107 shots in her career, which is third most all-time at Troy.
Â
Jacksonville State broke through in the 53rd minute. The goal snapped a sting of 423 scoreless minutes for the Trojan defense.
Â
Troy put the game away in the 80th minute with a fantastic one-touch shot from Alissa Jones that crept just inside the far post. The score was set up by a pass from Williams to Nicole Harris, who spun around a defender and found Jones streaking into the box. It was the sixth goal of the year for Jones, she is tied for seventh all-time with 14 career goals.
Â
The Trojans will return to action on Sunday as they play host to UAB at 1 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.
