MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University cross-country team wrapped up their second meet of the season today at the Azalea City Classic, finishing fourth.
Â
The Trojans competed against conference mates UL Lafayette and ULM, as well as West Florida, Mobile, New Orleans, Spring Hill and in-state rival, UAB.
Â
Junior Julia Ostendorf led the Trojan women in the 6k race finishing in eighth with a time of 21:58.69, just missing her personal best. Keaton Wallace and Kristina Bokenfohr also had impressive performances finishing 24:06.38 and 25:4317, respectively.
Â
Coach Elliott Blount is very optimistic of the women's team progression over the rest of the season.
Â
"We definitely showed signs of life and flashes of competitiveness," Blount said. "Julia placed eighth overall and did very well. Keaton and Kristina competed much better than their last runs. When we are back at full strength this team has the potential to do very good things."
Â
As for the Trojan men, Blount is planning on stronger performances in the future. "We went to accomplish certain things and we fell well short of that. We're young, but it's no excuse. We did not execute."
Â
Joe Giese led the Trojans finishing in 24th place, with a time of 27:39.17. Next, Â were Sent Kent and Timothy Bulger, who finished at 27:51.56 and 28:23.56 in the 8k race. The men ended the day in fourth place.
Â
The Trojans will train this week and then head to Gainesville, Fla. to compete at the Mountain Dew XC Invitational on September 20, with races beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Â
Blount is looking forward to the seeing the team progress and continue to improve. "In order for the men to take the next step someone has to emerge as a leader. We're back in action next week and we will compete better."
