RUSTON, La. – The Troy University soccer team fell 4-2 to Louisiana Tech at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex on Sunday in the second leg of its season-opening road trip.
Â
Troy (0-2) held a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes to play in the first half. That's when Louisiana Tech (1-0-1) applied its adjustments and flipped the momentum.
Â
In the 15th minute, Annabell Simpson worked the ball to the front of the box before beating her defender and chipping a shot into the far corner of the net. The goal was the second of the sophomore's career. Seven minutes later, Simpson found Chelsey Williams streaking into the penalty area. Williams then chipped a one-touch shot over the goalkeeper to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage. The goal gives Williams 18 for her career and moves her one shy of Erin Doud for fourth all-time in Troy history. Her two points in the game give her 41 for her career and moves her past Cecilia Thorngren and into a tie for fourth all-time.
Â
From there the tables turned. Louisiana Tech scored in the 36th minute off a beautiful cross from Kathryn Sloan to Taylor Dennis.
Â
"We played really good soccer for 25 minutes and then just got beat the rest of the way," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "You can't make the kinds of mistakes we made and expect to win. You have to make your opponents earn their opportunities."
Â
Troy struggled with possession in the second half as the Lady Techsters controlled the ball and the tempo. In the 59th minute, Louisiana Tech won a free kick from 20 yards out. The shot from Nicole Dincau deflected off a Troy defender and found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
The Lady Techsters added a goal from a corner in the 64th minute and another on a counterattack in the 81st. The Trojans fired five shots in the first half but could manage just two in the final 45 minutes.
Â
Troy will return home to face Alabama State on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.
