AUBURN, Ala. – Troy freshman Jared Bettcher completed his practice round Wednesday at the Auburn University Club in preparation the NCAA Auburn Regional, which opens with 18 holes on Thursday.
An All-Sun Belt First Team selection, Bettcher earned a spot in the NCAA Championships as an individual after finishing the season ranked 151st nationally by Golf Stat.
"He knows the golf course better than anyone else in the field," head coach Matt Terry said. "He's played 100s of rounds out there and that should help him out. He looked good during his practice round today. He hit the ball pretty good, but it's hard to read him during practice rounds as he is working on different things than just playing a straight round."
Bettcher led Troy with a 73.09 stroke average and turned in a pair of top-seven finishes at the Tiger Invitational (T5) and the Reunion Intercollegiate (T7).
"I feel like I have an advantage over even the Auburn (University) golfers," Bettcher said in an interview with the Dothan Eagle Monday. "I've been playing that course since I was 10 or 11. I know where to hit it and where not to hit it."
Bettcher has a hole-in-one on his resume this season and shot a 66 at the Tiger Invitational; the 66 tied the Troy record for the lowest opening-round score and was the second-lowest round in school history.
He will tee off on No. 1 at 10 a.m. with players from St. John's and Alabama State. The top individual who is not on one of top five teams in each NCAA Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Wichita, Kan., May 23-28.
