Men’s Golf in Ninth Following Opening Round of Sun Belt Championship

SAUCIER, Miss. – The Troy men's golf team opened play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Monday at the Grand Bear Golf Course and the Trojans sit in ninth place following the first of three rounds.
Jake Tucker fired a 2-over 74 to lead Troy and sits in a tie for 17th place. Tucker carded a birdie and two bogeys on both the front and back nine. Tolver Dozier, who is tied for 19th, was even through the front nine after a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys; however, a triple-bogey on No. 11 pushed his round to a 3-over 75.
UT Arlington shot 2-under as a team and has a two-stroke lead over No. 44 Georgia State and a seven-shot advantage of South Alabama. Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM round out the top five followed by UALR, Western Kentucky and Arkansas State all tied for sixth. Troy shot 18-over as a team followed by Texas State at 22-over.
Texas State's Stuart Smallwood and South Alabama's Tyler Klava are tied for the individual lead after shooting a 4-under.
Jared Bettcher, who entered the Sun Belt Championship as the top-ranked golfer in the league, finished his round at 5-over par. The freshman played even on the back nine, but couldn't quite recover from three bogeys and a double-bogey on the front of the course and sits in a tie for 31st place.
Clayton Vannoy is tied for 43rd place after shooting 8-over and Phillip Brennan was 13-over on the day and is in 50th position heading into Tuesday's second round.
The Trojans will tee off on No. 10 to open Tuesday's round beginning at 8 a.m.
