TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team heads to Saucier, Miss., and the Grand Bear Golf Course for the Sun Belt Conference Championship Monday through Wednesday.
The Trojans enter the Sun Belt Championship ranked third in the league at No. 72 in the country in the latest Golf Week rankings behind only Georgia State and South Alabama.
"We've got to get out of the gate from the start," head coach Matt Terry said. "From the first hole, the first guy teeing it up, we've got to go. We don't have to play perfect by any means, we've got to get off to a better start than we have all season and that's going to start with the first guy who tees off at 8 a.m.
"We need all five guys to get started well and put a round together that Georgia State, South Alabama, Louisiana-Lafayette, ULM and all the other teams see," Terry said. "Let them think about it, because we're not going to be. We've proved that we can we can play they second and third rounds all year better than anyone at the tournaments we've played. If we can post that first round, then we'll be able to play the next two and do our thing that we normally do."
Freshman Jared Bettcher leads the conference in the latest Golf Stat comparative rankings and enters the Sun Belt Championship with a 72.9 stroke average and has carded rounds of 66, 69 and 70 this season. He also has a hole-in-one on the year and has two top-10 finishes in the past four tournaments.
"He hasn't figured out everything about playing yet, he still makes freshman mistakes," Terry said. "He's been able to figure out some things a little faster than others and he can make birdies in bunches. If he eliminates mistakes, it's scary how good he can play. We hope for our team he continues to do what he's doing and he gets another top 10, top five or has a chance to win."
Phillip Brennan enters with Troy's second-best stroke average at 73.96 on the year and will be looking to build on a fifth-place finish at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship two weeks ago.
Jake Tucker has been a consistent force in the lineup for the Trojans all season with four finishes in the top 16 and a stroke average of 74.35, while Tolver Dozier enters the Sun Belt Championship with a stroke average of 74.58. Freshman Clayton Vannoy, who has a hole-in-one this season, will fill in the final spot in the lineup and enters with a 75.05 average on the year.
The winner of the Sun Belt Championship earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins with six regional sites May 15-17.
Troy will be in the first group on the course and the Trojans will tee off at 8 a.m.
