LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – David Hall hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning and Shane McCain struck out 12 over eight scoreless innings as Troy defeated UALR 3-0 Saturday at Gary Hogan Field to even the Sun Belt Conference series.
McCain's strikeout total was the most by a Troy pitcher since Clegg Snipes fanned 12 Coastal Carolina batters in 2007. It established a new career high for the southpaw and his eight innings of work were much needed for Troy after a 16-inning affair the night before. He scattered four hits over the eight innings and UALR never had a runner reach third base.
Hall's seventh homer of the season scored Tyler Vaughn and Garrett Pitts after the duo reached on a fielding error and infield single, respectively. Hall, who shares the hometown of Ft. Pierce, Fla., with McCain, took a 1-2 offering from Travis McDonald over the wall in right field for his second opposite field homer of the year.
Jeremy McGowan (3-3) took over for McCain in the ninth and retired all six batters he faced to pick up the win. Troy pitchers have struck out 27 batters through the first two games of the series to build on their Sun Belt leading total.
Troy (20-19, 7-9 Sun Belt) played solid defense behind McCain and McGowan including a highlight worthy grab by Clay Holcomb in center field to rob Ben Crumpton of extra bases to lead off the eighth inning.
McCain struck out multiple batters in four innings and struck out the side on two occasions. Troy pitchers have reached the double-digit strikeout mark in back-to-back games after Marc Skinner fanned 10 out of the bullpen in the series opener.
UALR's (15-21, 4-13) best chance came in the first inning when it had a pair on and just one out, but McCain struck out Justin Steelmon and got Bryson Thionnet to ground into a fielder's choice. UALR had a runner at second with one away in the seventh, but a strikeout and a fly out ended that threat.
McDonald (2-5) was saddled with the loss after he allowed three runs — two earned — on a pair of hits over four innings; he walked three and struck out four. Sam Thoele tossed six scoreless frames for UALR with three hits, three walks and seven strikeouts.
The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Troy has won 18 of the past 21 Sun Belt Conference games it has played on a Sunday.
