AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy track and field team will be returning to Auburn, Ala. this weekend for their second meet hosted by Auburn University at the Hutsell-Rosen Track, and their final road competition of the regular season.
"Once again we are headed back to Auburn for a great competition," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "Usually between this meet and Coach "O" our athletes really start to come together in preparation for the Sun Belt Competition. Our field event athletes will kick the meet off with the javelin, hammer and triple jump. This is an area we have become accustomed to producing points in at the conference meet and we look forward to the challenges this meet will provide."
The War Eagle Invitational will last two days, beginning Friday with men's hammer throw at 2 p.m. and women's hammer throw at 4:00 p.m. The javelin and triple jump contests will take place later Friday, along with the men's and women's 1500-meter and 5000-meter Invitational. Field events will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. and running events will commence at noon on Saturday with the women's 4x100 meter relay.
Demetris Elia will be competing in the men's hammer throw on Friday. Elia is ranked seventh in the conference in the hammer throw. Myles Charley will jump in the men's triple jump and is ranked ninth in the conference in the event.
Hayes Grissom will take part in the men's javelin throw at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Grissom took first place in the event last weekend at the USA Invitational. He is currently ranked second in the conference and 58th in the NCAA.
For the Trojan women, Nesha Defoe will compete in the triple jump and Mariah Pennington will throw in the women's javelin competition.
The team had standout performances at two meets last weekend, when half of the Trojans competed in the University of South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala. and other members of the team took part in the Spec Towns National Team Invitational in Athens, Ga.
Jordan Landburg ended last weekend with a first place performance in the 400-meters. Landburg is currently ranked 34th nationally and second in the conference in the event, as well as sixth in the conference in the men's 200-meters.
Benjamin Martin's 200-meter performance at the Spec Towns gave him a second place Sun Belt standing as well as an NCAA ranking. In the men's 100-meter dash, Martin is ranked second in the conference and 19th in the NCAA. He will run in the men's 100-meter dash on Saturday.
The Trojan's 4x100 relay teams saw success last weekend. The men's team of Martin, Landburg, Thaddeus Curtis and Philip Pritchett took third place at the Spec Towns, ranking them second in the conference and 53rd in the NCAA. The women's 4x100 relay team is seventh in the conference after their performance at the USA Invitational. Both teams will compete in Saturday's races.
Corina Cox is currently ranked nationally as well as second in the conference in women's discus, and also took a 14th place conference ranking in shot put last weekend following her performance in Athens. Cox will compete in the discus competition Saturday.
Taylor McDonald's time in the women's 400-meter hurdles last weekend has her ranked sixth in the conference, while Sierra King moved up to 16th in the Sun Belt in the women's 100-meter dash.
