TROY, Ala. – The Troy track and field teams are headed to a pair of meets this weekend, with a small group going to the Spec Towns National Team Invitational, hosted by Georgia, and the remainder going to the South Alabama Invitational.
The Troy track and field team are headed to Athens, Ga., for the Spec Towns National Team Invitational this weekend at the University of Georgia's Spec Towns Track.
"This weekend will be quite different for our teams," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "We have split the squads, sending the athletes to two great meets that offer different opportunities to our athletes.
"A smaller group is headed to the Spec Towns National Team Invitational and a larger group is headed to the South Alabama Invitational to face conference foes Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State. Out athletes look forward to the challenge these schools will provide and it should give us a taste of what is to come in the Sun Belt Championships."
The Trojans are coming off several season best times at last weeks Tiger Track Classic at Auburn University, and are hoping to see more season bests and higher rankings from this weekend's competition.
The Spec Towns National Team Invitational kicks off Friday at 2 p.m. with the men's and women's triple jump and women's shot put. The men's and women's hammer throw will be held later Friday afternoon. Saturday's field events at start at 10:30 a.m., and the women's 5000-meter will begin the running events at 1:10 p.m.
The South Alabama Invitational begins on Friday at 4:15 and continues through Saturday.
Corina Cox, who is currently ranked 16th in the conference in shot put, will compete in Friday's competition. After last weekends meet, Cox was ranked second in the discus in the conference and will look to reclaim her first place ranking during the women's discus competition on Saturday.
Demetris Elia will compete in men's hammer throw on Friday. Elia is ranked seventh in the conference from his performance at the USF Open.
Troy will have two competitors in the men's triple jump contest. Delonte Martistee is currently third in the conference rankings, while Myles Charley is in seventh place in the event. Charley will take part in the long jump on Saturday at noon.
The Trojan men are ranked 15th in the first week of the regional rankings. Several men's team members are individually ranked, including Benjamin Martin who is ranked 14th in the nation in the 100-meter dash and 46th in the 200-meter dash. Martin will run in both events, and the men's 4x100 relay on Saturday.
Jordan Landburg is ranked 19th nationally in the 400-meter dash and will compete in the 200-meters and 400-meter dash, as well the men's 4x100 relay in Saturday's competition.
