MOBILE, Ala.- The Troy track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Jaguar Opener at the University of South Alabama with several remarkable performances.
"It was a good start to the outdoor season in a smaller environment," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "We still produced results in several events and we put down some solid foundation for the season ahead."
"It was a pretty good start in the throws," Shawn Williams, throwers coach, said. "We had two meet champions and two more finalists and placers. Cori made a solid outdoor debut getting a USA Junior Championship qualifying mark and the second best mark of all time."
"Any time you have three different athletes in one event that have performances that all rank in the top-10 in school history, you can leave with your head held high," said distance coach Jeff Jenkins. "We're still looking to have some really fast marks, but depth that we have now has taken us to a new level. The cobwebs are now off an it's time to focus on getting faster."
The Trojan men's outdoor team placed second, just two points behind South Alabama. The women's team finished fourth.
Fresh off their indoor season, the Trojan women had an impressive showing at their first outdoor meet.
Julia Ostendorf brought home first place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:28.38. She also finished the 1500-meter run in 4:57.18, which gave her a third place finish.
Samantha Smith was right behind Ostendorf in both events finishing third in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:49.42, and fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:05.88.
The women's relay team consisting of Adria Hill, Aleeah Stigarll, Amiracle Watson and Sierra King took second place in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 48.23 seconds. The 1600-meter sprint medley relay team of Dallas Worthy, Tiffany Slater, Tabitha Parker and King finished fourth.
Worthy competed in the 300-meter dash with a time of 39.94 seconds, finishing in third place.
The Trojan women also took home a first place finish in discus with Corina Cox's 48.33-meter performance. Alexus Cobbs finished second in the long jump.
The Trojan men had an outstanding showing in their first meet of the year taking home seven first place finishes.
Troy swept the top three spots in 100-meter dash with Benjamin Martin, Jordan Landburg and Lance Holley taking first, second and third respectively.
Martin, Landburg, Holley and Thaddeus Curtis also took first in the men's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.77 seconds.
