Trojans Drop Two at WKU to open SBC Play

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Troy softball (14-17-2) dropped a pair of games at Western Kentucky (18-10-1) on Saturday to open up Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday.
Western Kentucky took the first game 3-0 and the second 8-1. The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at the WKU Softball Field.
Troy 0, Western Kentucky 3 (Game 1)
Affeldt got the start and, after a shaky first inning, settled down to retire 12 straight before giving up a home run in the fifth. She finished the day with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Western Kentucky got on the board in the first with an RBI double by Amanda Thomas, plating Preslie Cruce.
The Hilltoppers got two more in the fifth, beginning with a solo-shot by Brooke Holloway. They would add another with Olivia Watkins coming home on a throwing error.
The Trojans would threaten in the sixth, beginning with a leadoff single by Ebony Wright. After a fly out, Erica Davis crushed a double to the wall in left field to advance Wright to third.Â
Wright picked up a pair of hits, going 2-of-3 from the plate, including a double. Davis and Becca Hartley also had a double each.
Troy 1, Western Kentucky 8 (Game 2)
Ashley Rainey took the loss in game two, giving up six runs on six hits through 4.1 innings. Mock and Rachel Rigney came in in relief, with each allowing one run. Davis had a solid game at the plate, going 3-for-3.
Again, the Hilltoppers got thing started in the bottom half of the first. Shawna Sadler got on with a single and then came home on a double off the top of the left field fence.
Western Kentucky picked up another in the second on a solo home run by Andie Martin, and two more in the third.
The Trojans picked up a run in the fourth, on an RBI single by Becca Hartley. Michelle Phelps reached on a fielder's choice and was pinch-run for by Mackenzie Kayler. Meg Willis earned a walk after a tremendous at-bat, followed by the RBI single by Hartley.
The Hilltoppers added one more in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to pick up the 8-1 win.
