NEW ORLEANS, La. – With the regular season gone, the Troy women's basketball team now prepares for this week's Sun Belt Championships. The sixth-seeded Trojans open the tournament on Wednesday when they take on third-seeded UALR at 8:30 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
Troy and UALR are playing the final of four quarterfinal games on Wednesday. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinal to take on either WKU or UL Monroe. The tournament's championship game will be played on Saturday night.
Live stats for all tournament games will be available through SunBeltSports.org. All quarterfinal and semifinal games will also be streamed live on SunBeltSports.org, and the championship game will be shown on ESPN3.com. Also, Friday's semifinals will air on CSS/CST as a part of the Sun Belt Network. A live audio broadcast of all Troy games can be heard on TroyTrojans.com.
Troy (12-17, 8-10) comes into the tournament after dropping a close game at home on Saturday, 95-92, to Texas State. The Trojans led for the majority of the second half, but the Bobcats used a late run to snap Troy's six-game home winning streak.
The Trojans lead the Sun Belt in scoring at 81.3 points per game and would be just the second Sun Belt team since 2000 to average over 80.0 per game. Troy has scored 80-plus in five straight games, a first for the program since 1996-97 when the Trojans did so in six straight games.
Troy is led individually by All-America and Sun Belt Player of the Year candidate Joanna Harden who is averaging 25.7 points per game, the best in the Sun Belt and sixth best in the NCAA. The senior has scored 20-plus in 15 straight games and in 25 of 29 this season.
UALR (17-11, 12-6) closed the regular season on a three-game winning streak, all at home. Their last loss actually came at Trojan Arena where Troy defeated UALR 86-77 on February 26.
That win was the first in program history for Troy over UALR and made a split of the season series between the Sun Belt's top offense (Troy) and top defense (UALR). In fact, the 86 points by Troy were the most scored this season against UALR who gives up just 58.3 per game.
That win made Troy 1-12 all-time against UALR, a record that includes a loss in last year's Sun Belt Championships quarterfinals. UALR won that game, 65-52, in Hot Springs, Ark., on its way to an appearance in the title game.
