Troy (9-15, 5-8) is looking to bounce back from a 62-57 loss at UL Lafayette on Wednesday. In that game, the Trojans scored just 15 first-half points and trailed by 17 at the break. Troy got within one in the second half, but the Cajuns sealed the game at the free throw line down the stretch.
Despite scoring 57 points on Wednesday, their second lowest total of the season, the Trojans still lead the Sun Belt and rank 20th in the NCAA in scoring at 80.0 points per game.
Against UL Lafayette, Joanna Harden scored 20-plus for the 10th straight game with 27 points, including 23 in the second half. Harden in fourth in the NCAA and first in the Sun Belt in scoring at 25.4 points per game. She enters Saturday's game needing 24 points to break the Troy all-time single-season scoring record.
Harden made history earlier this month against South Alabama, scoring her 1,000th career point in Troy's 78-53 win over the Jaguars. That win was Troy's second straight over the Jaguars with the first being in the first round of last year's Sun Belt Championships.
South Alabama (7-16, 5-8) has lost four straight, a streak that started with that loss at Trojan Arena on February 6. The Jaguars lost their most recent game, 63-61, at Texas State who sits in second place in the Sun Belt standings.
The Jaguars, who have led the Sun Belt in 3-point shooting all season, are now tied with Troy for first in that category as each squad hits 6.7 3-pointers per game. South Alabama shoots 37 percent from deep, the best mark in the Sun Belt.
Troy and South Alabama, along with UL Monroe, are tied for sixth place in the Sun Belt standings. UL Lafayette is just a half game behind, but currently in ninth place as only three of the four will make the Sun Belt Championships.
In order to break the tie and take a season sweep of South Alabama, Troy will have to win in the Mitchell Center for the first time in program history. Troy is 15-19 all-time against South Alabama, but 0-8 at the Mitchell Center. Troy is 4-12 in games in Mobile, but the last win came in 1997-98, two seasons before the Mitchell Center opened.
Following Saturday's game, Troy has three of its remaining four at home, but the lone road contest is at UL Monroe.
