Trojans Continue Homestand with Samford

TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday when Samford visits Trojan Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.

Troy (2-3) is coming off of an 83-80 loss to Savannah State at home on Sunday. The Trojans started the game with on a 24-9 run, but went scoreless for six minutes late in the first half as Savannah State began to chip away. The Lady Tigers shot 57 percent in the second half to help complete the comeback.

Troy did outrebound Savannah State, 46-36, and has now outrebounded four of its five opponents. The Trojans rank first in the Sun Belt in rebounding (45.6 rpg) and third in rebounding margin (+2.2). Troy also ranks first in the Sun Belt, and 26th in the NCAA, in offensive rebounds (17.8/g).

Ronita Garrett led the Trojans with 21 points and 14 rebounds against Savannah State, marking her fourth double-double of the season, the most in the Sun Belt. Garrett now ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in scoring (16.2 ppg) and second in rebounding (11.2 rpg). She ranks 28th in the NCAA in rebounding and eighth in defensive rebounds (8.4/g).

Kristen Emerson is just behind Garrett as she ranks third in the Sun Belt in rebounding (8.6 rpg). She also ranks second in the Sun Belt, and 27th in the NCAA, in offensive rebounds (4.4/g).

Samford (4-2) is coming off of a 59-56, overtime win over defending Big 10 champion Penn State. The Bulldogs rank in the NCAA top 35 in field goal percentage (.457) and 3-point percentage (.387), but average just 64.0 points per game. They hold opponents to 58.8 points per game.

Samford is led in scoring by Taylor Reece (15.7 ppg) and Hannah Nichols (13.7 ppg). The pair has combined to make 30 of Samford's 43 3-pointers. That includes a 20-of-36 (55.6 percent) mark from Nichols who ranks 15th in the nation in 3-point percentage.

Troy is 9-7 all-time against Samford, but the two sides haven't met since 2006-07. Twelve of the previous 16 meetings came between 1997-98 and 2002-03 when the two teams were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Troy held a 9-3 advantage during that time, but since then Samford has won four straight meetings.

Following Wednesday's game, the Trojans will have 10 days before their next game, a December 13 home game against Alabama State. That will be the final of three straight at home for the Trojans.
