NEW ORLEANS – Montres Kitchens, Chandler Worthy and Terrence Jones highlight Troy's selections to the All-Sun Belt Conference Team, which was released by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Kitchens was a first team selection at defensive back, Worthy was a first team selection as a return specialist and a second team selection as an all-purpose player and Terrence Jones was a second team selection on the offensive line.
Dalton Bennett (OL), Brandon Burks (RB), Bryan Holmes (WR) and Tyler Roberts (DL) were honorable mention selections to the All-Sun Belt Team, while quarterback Brandon Silvers was named to the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer Team.
Kitchens led the Sun Belt Conference and ranked seventh nationally with six interceptions during his junior season. A native of Waynesboro, Ga., Kitchens was named the Walter Camp National Player of the Week after he intercepted three passes and had nine tackles in Troy's victory at Idaho.
He led the Trojans with 88 tackles (31 more than anyone else on the team) and recorded double-digit tackles in three different games – Georgia, South Alabama and Georgia Southern. Kitchens' interception tally was the most by a Troy player since 2008 and the most by a Sun Belt player since 2012; no Sun Belt player has had more than six interceptions since 2009.
Worthy became just the sixth player in FBS history to return a kickoff for a touchdown in back-to-back games when he did so against New Mexico State and Appalachian State. The senior from Griffin, Ga., finished the year averaging 26.1 yards per kickoff return despite facing pooch kicks over the final six games of the season.
He was the only Sun Belt player to return a kickoff for a touchdown and was one of just nine players nationally to return multiple kickoffs for a score. Worthy finished his career second in Troy history with 1,919 kickoff return yards, while his 704 yards this season were the fourth most in a single-season in Troy history. He finished the season with 1,187 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.
Jones finished his Troy career with 44 starts, including 42 straight to close out his career. The Huntsville, Ala., native did not allow a sack during the 2014 season and graded out at over 92 percent for the year. Jones finished the year with 16.5 knockdown blocks and led an offensive line that protected for NCAA record-setting quarterback Brandon Silvers.
Silvers set the NCAA FBS record for completion percentage by a freshman as he completed 191 of his 271 pass attempts (70.5 percent). Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, who completed 69.5 percent of his passes in 2007, held the record previously.
A native of Orange Beach, Ala., Silvers finished his freshman campaign with 11 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. He was third in the Sun Belt with a 138.6 passing efficiency rating and threw for 507 yards and five touchdowns in Troy's final two games of the season.
Bennett has started 24 straight games over the past two seasons for the Trojans on the offensive line. The junior from Marianna, Fla., finished the year with over 30 knockdown blocks and graded out at 86.5 percent.
Burks rushed for 584 yards and three touchdowns during his junior campaign. The Daleville, Ala., native averaged 6.1 yards per carry and topped the 100-yard mark against New Mexico State and Georgia State. Burks rushed for 176 yards on just 10 carries against the Aggies; his 17.6 yards per carry ranked as the second highest in a game in Troy history.
Holmes, a native of Lake Butler, Fla., led the Trojans with 474 yards receiving and five touchdown grabs. The junior averaged 13.9 yards per reception and became the first Trojan since 2006 to have a pair of touchdown catches of over 41 yards in a game.
Roberts finished ninth in the Sun Belt with five sacks and 12th with 9.5 tackles for loss despite battling an injury over the final 25 percent of the season. The junior from Hoover, Ala., led the Trojans with four quarterback hurries and also broke up a pair of passes.
