Troy Runs Past UAH in 92-56 Exhibition Win
11/6/2014 8:37:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team ramped up the defensive pressure and ran in transition all night on its way to a 92-56 exhibition win over UAH on Thursday night at Trojan Arena.
The Trojans forced 37 UAH turnovers and scored 41 points off of them while running out to 24 fast break points. Junior college transfer Rachel Reid led Troy with 26 points in her debut. She led three Trojans that scored in double figures, including Brianna Lancaster with 17 points and another junior college transfer, Lacey Buchanon, who had 11 points, mostly from mid-range.
Lancaster, one of four Trojan seniors, went 6-of-10 on the night, including a dominant performance in the post early. The Waynesboro, Miss., native also finished 5-of-7 from the free throw line, drawing two of those fouls early while establishing herself in the post.
"We did a lot of things well tonight, but we did a lot of things like it was the first game of the season," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said.
The Troy defensive pressure began to make its mark midway through the first half. With the scored tied 14-14 and 10:30 to go before the break, Troy forced turnovers on five of UAH's next six possessions, leading to an 8-0 run and a lead the Trojans would never relinquish.
"A lot of our turnovers came from changing defenses and keeping them out of a rhythm," Rigby said. "I would still like to see more pressure. I think we were a little tentative. I know it doesn't look like it on the stat line, but we've got to get more aggressive on the ball and in the passing lanes."
The Trojans took a 44-30 lead into the break, but had yet to connect on a 3-pointer. That changed just 22 seconds into the second half when Reid connected on her first of three and set the second-half tone. Troy went on to outscore the Chargers 48-26 in the second frame.
Reid finished 9-of-16 from the floor, 3-of-9 from deep and 5-of-5 from the line. Her perfect performance was part of a 22-of-27 effort from the line for Troy. UAH, in comparison, took just 12 free throws but made all 12.
Reid also dished out four assists, tying Ronita Garrett for the team high. Garret, Troy's leading rebounder a year ago, picked back up with a game-high nine boards on the night. Despite her efforts, though, the Trojans outrebounded the undersized Chargers by just two, 37-35.
Troy did double UAH in the paint, outscoring the Chargers 42-24 down low. A lot of those buckets underneath came on the break where Troy outscored the Chargers 24-2. The 24 fast break points were more than Troy posted in any contest a year ago.
Overall, the Trojans shot 47 percent (34-of-73) from the floor while holding UAH to 40 percent (19-of-47). The 47 shot attempts would have tied for the fewest the Trojans allowed a year ago.
While playing their signature up-tempo style and pressure defense, the Trojans committed just 12 turnovers and saw UAH scored just six points off of them.
Halle Jarnagin led the Chargers with 18 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting. She was one of three Chargers to go 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
The Trojans open their regular season next Friday when they travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers at Auburn Arena at 6 p.m. Troy will continue its opening weekend road trip with a Sunday contest at Clemson.
