Troy is coming off of a 12-18 season in 2013-14 that included an 8-10 Sun Belt record and a fifth place finish in the conference. The Trojans led the Sun Belt in scoring for the second straight season, this time with an 80.4 points per game scoring average, the 15th best mark in the NCAA.
Third-year head coach Chanda Rigby is known for her up-tempo style of basketball that produces the high offensive numbers. Rigby and the Trojans also utilize a pressure defense that was evident last season when they led the Sun Belt with 9.9 steals per game and were second in the league forcing 20.1 turnovers per game.
The pressure defense and up-tempo offense were in full display last week as the Trojans defeated UAH, 92-56, in an exhibition game at Trojan Arena on Thursday. Troy forced 37 UAH turnovers in the game and posted 21 steals. Troy outscored UAH in fast break points, 24-2.
Junior college transfer Rachel Reid led Troy with 26 points in the exhibition on 9-of-16 shooting. Senior forward Brianna Lancaster posted 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Reid started in the Troy backcourt with Preseason All-Sun Belt first team selection Ashley Beverly-Kelley who averaged 13.2 points and 3.5 assists per game last season.
Auburn is coming off of a 19-15 season that included a sixth place finish in the SEC. The Tigers played in the WNIT and advanced to the third round. Like Troy, the Tigers feature a pressure defense that led the SEC with 10.4 steals per game a season ago.
Troy is 2-21 all-time against Auburn, including an 0-16 mark in Auburn. Troy last defeated Auburn in the 1979-80 season. Auburn has won 14 straight meetings in the series.
