Trojans Set for Thursday Exhibition

TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team will host West Florida in an exhibition game at Trojan Arena as it opens the 2014-15 season on Thursday. The Trojans and Argos will tip off at 7:30 p.m., as a part of a doubleheader with the Troy women's team, who hosts UAH at 5:15 p.m.

The Trojans are entering their second season under head coach Phil Cunningham. Last season, Troy posted an 11-20 mark, and finished eighth in the conference. Highlighting the season was an 85-81 win over Georgia State, who was previously undefeated in conference play.

Troy returns just two letterwinners from last year's squad. Kevin Thomas, Troy's lone returning starter, earned Preseason All-Sun Belt third team honors. He averaged 6.9 rebounds in 2013-14, which ranks second among returning rebounders in the Sun Belt. He finished last season with 215 rebounds, the eighth most in a single season in Troy's Division I history. On the season, he averaged 9.2 points per contest and scored in double figures 14 times last season, including four double-doubles.

The team features nine newcomers and three returning redshirts. The squad boasts five incoming freshman, three junior college transfers and one NCAA Division I transfer in Musa Abdul-Aleem who comes to Troy from South Florida.

West Florida finished eighth in the Gulf South last season as they posted a 7-20 overall record. The team returns three starters and nine letterwinners. Under head coach Bob Stinnett, West Florida has gone 59-77 in his five seasons. Four of West Florida's players hail from Alabama.

Next up, the Trojans open regular-season play with back-to-back home games. First, they host Brewton-Parker next Friday at 7 p.m. After that, they welcome SEC opponent Ole Miss on Monday, November 17, at 7 p.m.
