Williams Sets Scoring Record as Trojans Roll Over UALR
10/24/2014 9:21:00 PM | Soccer
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – Junior forward Chelsey Williams set a new Troy scoring record with her 24th career goal in the Trojans' 3-0 win over UALR at the Coleman Sports and Recreation Complex on Friday.
After Annabell Simpson pulled up in the box in the 29th minute, Williams received the pass and snuck a shot just under the crossbar. It was her seventh goal of the season and third in the last five games. Williams set the Troy career points record (55) with her goal on Sunday against Georgia Southern. For Simpson, it was her ninth assist of the year, tying Cecilia Thorngren's 2012 single-season mark.
"The goal came at an ideal time, we were really under pressure until that time," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "She has scored a lot in her career and picked good time to do it, she did it again tonight."
Troy (13-5, 5-3 Sun Belt) scored again in the 41st minute when Natalie Melillo took a volleyed pass from Jasmie Fahrnbauer on a free kick from Alissa Jones and scored her fourth goal of the year. The Trojans put the game away in the 70th minute when Jones served a corner into the box that found Abby Reynolds, who headed it in for Troy's third goal.
With her third assist of the game, Jones tied a Troy single-game record. Earlier in the season against Alabama State, Jones set a single-game record with 11 shots.
The win moves Troy into a tie with Appalachian State for third in the conference standings. App St holds the tiebreaker after the Mountaineers won the head-to-head match 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 10.
"UALR was a tough team to play, they brought everything they had," Hamilton said. "We scored two goals on set pieces; that has been a motto of ours. We feel that if we can win the set piece battle, we have a good chance to win the game."
The Trojans have outscored their opponents 7-0 in the last three matches. It was the team's 10th shutout win of the season. UALR falls to 11-5-1 overall and 2-5-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Troy will return to action on Sunday for the team's season finale against Arkansas State at 1 p.m. in Jonesboro.
