Troy Soccer Claims No. 2 Seed with Win at Arkansas State
10/26/2014 4:04:00 PM | Soccer
JONESBORO, Arkansas – Troy stripped the ball in the midfield, Alissa Jones slipped past a pair of Arkansas State defenders and with a quick swoop of her foot gave Troy the lead in the 56th minute and ultimately the second seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that is set to begin Nov. 5 in Mobile. It is the program's best-ever finish since joining the league in 2005.
Jones was far from done, however. Fresh off a program record-tying three-assist game against UALR on Friday, the junior from Mustang, Oklahoma, scored her second goal of the match and 11th of the season in the 61st minute. Only Jill Pinder's 14-goal performance in 2008 tops Jones' 2014 act.
Jones now holds the Troy single-season record for most points (32), most assists (10) and most shots (83). She also has nine career game-winning goals and six on the season, both are Troy records.
Not to be outdone, Chelsey Williams, who already owned the Troy career points record and set the career goals record on Friday, scored in the 69th minute for her 25th career goal and eighth of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis has been phenomenal all season and recorded her ninth shutout of the 2014 campaign, also a Troy record. As a team, the Trojans have posted 11 clean sheets, most in the conference and three more than any other Troy team in history.
Senior defender Paige McMillian set a career record by starting the 80th game of her four-year tenure and will tie the career games played record with a start in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
"We're extremely proud of how our back line and goalkeeper have played all year, but the whole team has done well. A big part of our 11 shutouts has been our front three being able to keep pressure on the ball and give us scoring opportunities," head coach Jason Hamilton said.
"Alissa and Chelsey have had a great year for us. We put Alissa in a position to be a little more effective for us and she has grown into that position very well and has become one of the best players in the conference. At the beginning of the year, Chelsey was close to some scoring marks and probably had a little bit slower of a start than she wanted, but good players peek at the right times and she peeked during conference play and put some big points on the board for us."
The Trojans (14-5, 6-3) got off to a slow start in the match, but were able to produce several good looks on goal. The team fired off seven shots, two on goal. Troy came out of halftime firing as the Trojans won the ball and Nicole Harris found Jones alone in space for the first goal of the match. It was the second assist of the season for Harris.
Minutes later, Williams feed Jones on the left side of the penalty area. Jones chipped a shot over the keeper for her second goal. In the 68th minute, Troy was awarded a corner and Louise Cheng serviced the ball just outside the six-yard box to Jasmine Fahrnbauer, who deflected the ball to Williams for the score.
"It was a game that we wanted to get a good result in. We knew we had to come out and play better in the second half and I think we did that," Hamilton said. "I thought the players responded very well. Most importantly, we got the result we were looking for and put ourselves in a good spot for the conference tournament."
Troy will play seventh-seeded UL Lafayette at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at The Cage on the campus of South Alabama. The Trojans defeated ULL 2-0 on Oct. 3 at the Troy Soccer Complex.
