Records Tumble as Troy Soccer Finishes Home Schedule Unbeaten

TROY, Alabama – In a season that has seen numerous records fall, the Troy University soccer team topped things off on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Georgia Southern at the Troy Soccer Complex.
With two regular season games remaining, the team has already won more games in a season than any other squad in the program's history, which began in 1997. Troy is 12-5 overall on the year and will finish the 2014 campaign 9-0 at home and winners of 12 straight at home since 2013. Troy previously won 11 overall games in a season in 2001 and 2010.
"We've had success at home all year long and we wanted to keep that success today," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "It was real tight first half. We came out executed just as we should have in the second half and were solid defensively."
On a penalty kick in the 74th minute, Chelsey Williams tied Jill Pinder with 23 career goals. The score gave Williams 55 career points and pushed her past Mary Morris for most all-time. Alissa Jones previously this season set the career (143), single-season (78) and single-game (11) shot record. Jones (8) and Williams (6) are No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on Troy's career game-winning goal list.
Jones scored her 17th career goal – fifth most in Troy history – in the 69th minute on a pass from Annabell Simpson. The goal was Jones' ninth of the year – fourth most in Troy single-season history. The assist was Simpson's eighth of the campaign, which is second most in a season behind Cecilia Thorngren's nine in 2012.
Defender Paige McMillian started her 78th game as a Trojan, tying Ashley Branhan for most all-time. Freshman Mikki Lewis now owns the record for most wins by a goalkeeper in a season with 12. With Sunday's decision, Troy has eight shutout victories, which is also a record.
Louise Cheng got the scoring started in the 52nd minute with a goal off a free kick. It was her second of the year; the first coming on a free kick from nearly the same spot on the field against UL Lafayette.
The Trojans are now 4-3 in Sun Belt Conference play with an opportunity to climb in the standings depending on other Sunday results. Troy entered the day sixth in the league.
Troy also honored its seniors – Paige McMillan, Georgia Wallis, Jane Latif and Kailani Decock in a pregame ceremony.
Georgia Southern falls to 9-5-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Troy will travel to UALR on Friday and Arkansas State on Sunday to round out its regular season schedule.
