Troy Soccer Falls at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy University soccer team failed to take advantage of several early opportunities in falling to Texas State 2-0 on Sunday at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Trojans (10-5, 2-3 Sun Belt) took seven first half shots, four on target, but couldn't break through against the league's top defense. Troy's best early opportunity came in the 15th minute off a free kick. The ball fell in front of the net with a couple of Trojans battling defenders for a shot. A Troy foul, however, would end the threat.
From there, Texas State's defense regrouped and 15 minutes later, the Bobcats found the back of the net off the foot of Rachel Grout, who scored on a cross from the right side from Brooke Ramsey.
Texas State (9-4-1, 4-1) goalkeeper Caitlynn Rinehart was phenomenal earning nine saves as Troy fired off 19 shots in the contest.
The Bobcats scored early in the second half as Lynsey Curry won the ball on the right wing and outpaced Troy defender before landing a shot just inside the near post into the top of the net.
"We just couldn't seem to get out of our own way this weekend. You have to put goals in the back of the net and when you have as many chances as we did and can't [score] then you can't win," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "This is conference play, and if you get outworked you will lose, we found that out twice this weekend."
Freshman Natalie Melillo had a chance to get Troy on the board late in the second half but her shot from distance hit the crossbar and was cleared away by the Texas State defense.
Sunday's loss marks the second straight suffered by the Trojans and just the second time this season the team has been shutout.
Troy will return home to face Georgia State on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex. The Trojans will also host Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
