Trojans Host Georgia Southern Sunday at 1p.m.
TROY, Alabama – Annabell Simpson's goal in the 61st minute lifted the Troy University soccer team to a 1-0 victory on Friday night at the Troy Soccer Complex. The Trojans are now 8-0 at home this season and have won 11 straight on their home turf since last season.
Layna Hatfield serviced a long throw from the left side that overshot Simpson in the penalty box. Georgia State's goalkeeper was able to get a touch but collided with a defender sending the ball into Simpson's path. The sophomore took a shot that was deflected, but Alissa Jones streaked in and tapped a back heel pass to Simpson who rolled it inside the far post for her second goal of the season. For Jones, it was her seventh assist of the year. Jones and Simpson are tied for third in the conference in assists.
Troy (11-5, 3-3 Sun Belt) was able to fight off persistent pressure from Georgia State (5-7-4, 3-2-1) in the closing minutes to preserve the win. Defenders Georgia Wallis, Paige McMillan, Payton Donley and Mallary Hedden stayed organized in the final 25 minutes and cut out numerous Panther attacks.
The win is the 11th of the season for the Trojans, matching a program seaon high set twice previously. The team has three regular season games remaining. It was the eighth shutout of the year for the team, setting a new single-season record. Freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis is second in the league with six clean sheets.
"We're pleased to be back in the win column," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "Those are games that you want to see your team grind out and win and show a little bit of character. Those types of wins are what it is going to take to be at the top of the conference and get a good seed going into the [Sun Belt Conference] tournament."
The Trojans are currently sixth in the Sun Belt Confernce standings. Troy has an opportunity to climb as it faces a team one game ahead in Georgia Southen on Sunday.
Troy had a scoring opportunity late in the first half when the team won the ball in the midfield with eight seconds remaining. Sophomore Abby Reynolds streaked towards goal with the ball and fired off a shot that sailed high from 22 yards out as time expired.
Moments before Simpson's score, the Trojans earned a free kick in the center of the pitch 20 yards from goal. Jones' attempt on goal was true but was hauled in by the GSU keeper.
Troy will return to action on Sunday as it takes on Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. for the final home game of the season. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to kickoff.
