Troy Soccer Falls to Appalachian State in Overtime
10/10/2014 9:09:00 PM | Soccer
BOONE, North Carolina – The first 45 minutes against Appalachian State were not what the Troy University soccer team had planned. The second 45 were much better, but the Trojans ultimately fell 3-2 in the second overtime.
The Mountaineers (6-7, 3-1 Sun Belt) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Nicole Steyl landed the ball into the right side of the net off a corner. It was the first goal the Trojans had surrendered in more that 200 minutes. Appalachian State would take a 2-0 lead just before halftime when Leah Drawdy scored on a pass from Sarah Moon from 25 yards out.
Troy (10-4, 2-2) got its offensive attack in order in the second half. Abby Reynolds scored her fourth goal in three games when she found the net when the Appalachian State goalkeeper parried a shot from Chelsey Williams.
Williams tied the game in the in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick. It was Williams fifth goal of the season and 22nd of her career, one shy of tying Jill Pinder for most all-time at Troy. Williams' earlier assist combined with the goal gave her three points in the game and 53 for her career, tying Mary Morris for most in Troy history. It was the first Troy goal scored on a penalty kick since September 6, 2013 at UAB.
Appalachian State's Jenna Caudle scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute in double overtime on a cross from Lindsey Tully.
"They were the better team from the start," head coach Jason Hamilton said. THe second half was much better, but you can't win games when you get outworked."
The Trojans are now 1-1 in overtime games this season. Troy will travel to Texas State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
